Ealing surgeon named among UK’s most influential Black Britons

An Ealing Hospital orthopaedic surgeon has been shortlisted on a prestigious national list celebrating the UK’s most influential people of African, African Caribbean and African American heritage.

Samantha Tross, a consultant at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, appears in this year’s Powerlist Top Ten, compiled annually by Powerful Media.

It marks another milestone in what has been a remarkable year for the surgeon, who in April was elected to the council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England 0 one of the profession’s highest honours. The peer-elected position gives her a direct role in shaping national policy on surgical training, patient safety, examinations and the future development of the specialty.

Ms Tross, who specialises in hip and knee surgery at Ealing Hospital, said she was honoured by the recognition and hoped it would inspire others to pursue careers in medicine. She said: “Representation matters. I’m proud to contribute to a more inclusive profession.”

Born in Guyana and raised in London, she became Britain’s first female consultant orthopaedic surgeon of African Caribbean descent when appointed in 2005. Her inclusion on the Powerlist follows her receipt of an honorary doctorate from the University of Portsmouth earlier this year, awarded for services to surgery and diversity.
