Actonians played AFC Wimbledon in the third of the three group stage games in the FA Women’s National League Cup. They had already won the first two ties against Maidenhead and Chelsea U21’s, a massive achievement in itself, and just a point this afternoon (28 September 2025) would secure top spot.
They would need to do this without 10 first team regulars who were all absent from the squad.
The rain started to come down shortly before the 2pm kick off and the visitors began the more offensive side. However Actonians were solid at the back with Athena Diachenko and Mara Bramwell putting in some strong challenges.
Actonians had their first goal attempt in the 14th minute when Abigail Kargbo fired her shot across the face of the goal but nothing else was created until just before the break with the home side all working hard to keep Wimbledon at bay while Elisa Dogor in goal came to the rescue a couple of times. In the 44th minute Kargbo had a shot saved and just before the end of the first half Bramwell hit a free kick from long range on target which was also saved.
Half time 0-0
The second half could not have began better for Actonians. Kargbo made a run into the Wimbledon box to create a scoring chance that she could have taken but she unselfishly squared the ball to Angie Dunbar-Bonnie who fired home. 1-0. Kargbo had a shot of her own in the 56th minute which was blocked by the oncoming defender.
Changes were made on the hour with Annabel Fawcett, Calli Weaver and Amelia Cornish coming on to replace Bramwell, Jasmine Williamson and Dunbar-Bonnie. With Gabriella Bishop now leading the backline the Actonians defence had to be strong in limiting the amount of chances Wimbledon could create.
Dogor was called upon a few times to make some great saves too. With 10 minutes left a bit of the pressure at the back was temporarily relieved when Actonians won a free kick just outside the Wimbledon box. Nour Aboul Kheir fired her shot into the wall but was quick to react to the rebound and her second shot was saved. Back under pressure again soon after and Dogor needed to add to her list of great saves for the afternoon.
Another change was made in the 86th minute with Izzy Morley replacing Kargbo. A minute later Dogor made what was probably the save of the match. She made three more saves but in the 92nd minute Wimbledon finally got their equaliser.
Full time 1-1
We now eagerly await the draw to see who Actonians get in the next round of the league cup but fixture wise they are back at home again next week in a big game.
