Hanwell Town FC has played host to an international gathering of footballing talent, as teams from Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Ghana and Nigeria descended on West London last week (27 May 2025 – 31 May 2025) for the 2025 Unity Cup.
Each squad used Hanwell Town’s Connell’s Community Stadium facilities as their training base.
The tournament, which took place at Brentford FC’s Gtech Community Stadium, celebrates African and Caribbean football heritage and featured players with strong links to English clubs.
Nigel Hunt, chief executive officer of Hanwell Town FC, said: “We are delighted to have welcomed all competing teams in the Unity Cup to the Connell’s Community Stadium for their training sessions.”
Mr Hunt added: “It was a privilege to be chosen and it demonstrates the growing reputation the club has internationally in terms of training facilities. It was a pleasure to host them all and we wish all teams well for their upcoming World Cup qualifying campaigns.”
Jamaica, under the management of former England boss Steve McClaren, arrived in Hanwell with a squad featuring UK-based players such as Dexter Lembikisa (Barnsley), Amari’i Bell (Luton) and Isaac Hayden (Portsmouth). Trinidad & Tobago called on Crystal Palace’s Rio Cardines, while Ghana included Jordan Ayew (Leicester) and Brandon Thomas-Asante (Coventry). Nigeria’s squad boasted stars like Wilfried Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Samuel Chukwueze.
On the pitch, Jamaica beat Trinidad & Tobago 3-2 in their semi-final, while Nigeria overcame Ghana 2-1. Ghana claimed bronze with a 4-0 victory before Nigeria lifted the trophy after a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout win over Jamaica.
