The Royal British Legion Club in Greenford, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, has been given £100,000 to carry out urgent repairs to its roof and car park, after local MP James Murray helped secure a grant from HS2’s Community and Environment Fund.
The money will be used to replace the main roof – now over 80 years old – and to resurface its deteriorating car park.
In recent years, the ageing roof has allowed water to seep through, damaging interior furnishings and floors, while the car park has been impacted with an increasing number of potholes and cracks.
The funding comes from one of HS2’s community programmes set up to help offset the disruption caused by the construction of the high-speed rail link between London and the West Midlands.
After meeting with HS2 in 2024, Mr Murray, MP for Ealing North, urged the company to direct more support to Greenford. He then contacted local groups to identify eligible projects and has since worked with the Royal British Legion Club to help bring their application to fruition.
Gary Webb, vice-chair of the Royal British Legion Club Greenford, said: “This is fantastic news for the Royal British Legion Club Greenford. We had no idea about this funding until James got in touch about it, and we really appreciate him pushing HS2 to help make this happen.”
He added: “The club is more popular than ever for all sorts of events, all year round. This funding means we can repair the roof and get rid of the car park potholes, helping to make sure the club continues to be a popular place to meet in the heart of Greenford.”
Mr Murray added: “I am really glad the Royal British Legion Club Greenford will now be able to carry out much-needed works to their roof and car park. The club is now in its 90th year, and I hope this funding will help protect its place at the heart of the Greenford for the future.
“We all want the HS2 works to be over as quickly as possible, given all the disruption they have caused in the local area. In the meanwhile, I am grateful to HS2 for agreeing to this, and I am very glad that the RBL Club Greenford will now benefit from their community funding.”
Mr Murray also said that he is continuing to support other local groups with their funding applications and encouraged any interested organisations to get in touch.
