Ealing Council expands benefits in staff recruitment and retention drive

Ealing Council employees can now take up to eight weeks of paid paternity leave under a package of new and improved staff benefits.

The council said the extension from two weeks, alongside the wider package, was intended to help it attract and retain employees.

Maternity and adoption pay has also been increased, while a retention payment has been introduced for staff returning from maternity or adoption leave.

Employees will also be able to apply for loans to cover deposits on privately rented homes or secure childcare places.

Councillor Steve Donnelly, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for inclusive economy and efficiency, said the policies would help the council “recruit and retain the best possible talent to serve the people of Ealing”.

The increase has been welcomed by The Dad Shift, which campaigns for better paternity leave.

George Gabriel, co-founder of The Dad Shift, said: “With eight weeks properly paid paternity leave, these blokes will have a meaningful chance to support their partners, bond with their babies and take their first steps figuring out what it means to be a father.”

Dean Mullins, GMB representative at Ealing Council, said: “The first few weeks after the birth of a child can be challenging for any family, but especially so when there are complications or a longer recovery period for the mother.

“Having additional paid leave available can make a significant difference, providing much-needed support during a critical time for both parents and children.”
