Northolt Underground station is now step-free from street to train following the completion of a long-awaited accessibility project.
A new lift and footbridge have opened at the Central line station, with manual boarding ramps available to help passengers get on and off trains.
Work to make Northolt station accessible began in February 2025, five years after construction was originally due to start before being paused because of the pandemic. Transport for London (TfL) confirmed the work was completed on schedule.
TfL also confirmed that two accessible toilets are now open, although some baby changing facilities have yet to be finished.
Northolt is the latest London Underground station to become step-free, with Surrey Quays also becoming accessible at the same time. There are now 95 step-free Tube stations.
Bassam Mahfouz, London Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon, told EALING.NEWS: “Today marks a fantastic moment for Northolt and for everyone who uses this station, after years of campaigning and waiting.
“For too long, passengers who use wheelchairs, have mobility difficulties, travel with young children have been unable to use the station, or struggled.
“I’ve campaigned for step-free access at Northolt and secured a commitment pre-COVID to ensure this vital station would be opened up with step-free access. Today, those barriers are finally coming down.
“Having secured lifts at Greenford and Hanwell and growing up in Northolt, I’m delighted that this life changing improvement is now open. It means so much to local residents, from greater independence to dignity and opportunity.
“This is a huge step for Northolt overcome and I will keep fighting to make sure more stations across Ealing and Hillingdon are made accessible, with North Acton next.”
Stuart Harvey, TfL’s chief capital officer, said: “Making the capital’s transport network more accessible is a key priority for us, and I’m delighted that Northolt and Surrey Quays stations are now step-free.”
Councillor Dominic Moffitt, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for climate action, said: “The completion of step-free access at Northolt station is fantastic news for our residents and a major step forward for accessibility in the borough.”
