University Of West London student reaches Sondheim showcase

A student from  the University of West London’s Drama Studio London has been named one of just 12 finalists in a prestigious national musical theatre competition.

Erica Schoebinger, who is studying for an MFA in Professional Acting at Drama Studio London, will perform in the final of the Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition on Sunday (7 June 2026).

The gala final takes place at the Sondheim Theatre in London’s West End and is widely regarded as one of the leading showcases for emerging musical theatre talent in the UK.

Founded in 2007, the annual competition attracts hundreds of applicants from drama schools across the country. Finalists perform two songs – one by the late composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim and another from a contemporary musical theatre production – before a panel of industry judges.

Max Saunders Singer, course leader for the MFA at Drama Studio London, said: “Throughout her training Erica has approached her work with a playful flexibility. This is present in all aspects of her work as an actor including her singing.”

Reflecting on reaching the final, Erica said: “I can’t believe I now have the opportunity to perform with others who are also passionate about Stephen Sondheim’s work. I’m so thankful to be one of the twelve finalists and hope to honour the work of this remarkable composer and lyricist with my performance.”
