An Ealing walking club founded more than 80 years ago is encouraging residents to swap screens and city stress for countryside walks and fresh air.
Ealing Outdoor Club was set up in the 1940s by a group of outdoor enthusiasts and today organises weekly walks, cycling trips and longer adventures across the UK and abroad.
Member David Cross joined the club along with his wife Eleri while recovering from heart surgery more than a decade ago.
Mr Cross said: “The club has around 50-60 members. We’re a friendly bunch and are always keen to welcome new people. The club is as much about mental as physical wellbeing and gives people the opportunity to get out of the house.”
He added: “The Sunday morning walks average around six to nine miles and are guided by one of the EOC members, with someone at the back to ensure everyone gets home. It’s a great activity for all ages.”
Bhavin Visavadia, a facial cancer and reconstructive surgeon, added that walking helps him “reflect and reset” away from the pressures of hospital work.
He said: “Walking has become a vital way to process my experiences and maintain my perspective as well as support my physical and mental wellbeing. I find that returning to nature is essential for me to continue to deliver the best possible care for my patients.”
