Ealing North MP James Murray has been appointed Health and Social Care Secretary after Wes Streeting resigned from the Cabinet.
Downing Street confirmed the appointment on Thursday (14 May 2026) night, with Mr Murray moving from his role as Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Posting on X, Mr Murray said: “Deeply honoured to be appointed by the Prime Minister as Health & Social Care Secretary. Huge thanks to @RachelReevesMP for my time as part of her fantastic team. Can’t wait to get started and continue @wesstreeting’s brilliant work on such a critical mission for our country.”
Mr Streeting, the MP for Ilford North resigned earlier in the day, criticising Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership and saying it would be “dishonourable and unprincipled” to remain in Cabinet.
Mr Murray has represented Ealing North since 2019 and previously served as Deputy Mayor of London for Housing and Residential Development between 2016 and 2019 under Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.
Lucy Rigby MP has been appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury, replacing Mr Murray.
