UWL students plant trees in Southall

Fifteen student volunteers from Ealing’s University of West London (UWL) have taken part in a tree planting project at Glade Lane Canalside Park in Southall, supporting local charity Letting Grow and Ealing Council.

The students were joined by members of UWL’s Volunteering team and Students’ Union president Namira Shrestha, and planted more than 150 trees during their session. The project forms part of the Southall Wellbeing Way initiative, which aims to create new wildlife habitats and improve local green spaces and is funded by the Mayor of London in partnership with the Canal and River Trust and Peabody Housing Association.

The work focused on restoring degraded land to improve soil quality, increase biodiversity, enhance water absorption and support long term carbon storage. UWL’s Sustainability Department estimates that the newly planted trees will capture around 600kg of carbon each year.

Namira Shrestha said the project helped bring the university community together while contributing to environmental improvements in Southall.

Several Public Health students were involved, supported by lecturer Janine Braithwaite, who said the activity aligned with promoting health and wellbeing while strengthening community engagement.
