Perivale teen receives national youth award

A Perivale teenager who was recognised last year for his caring responsibilities has received a British Citizen Youth Award medal at the Palace of Westminster.

Raphael Chiwandire, 15, was presented with the BCyA Medal of Honour last week (29 October 2026) which follows his win in the sibling category at Contact’s 2025 awards for supporting his younger brother and mother.

His mother, Nyasha Chiwandire, said Raphael had been recognised for his contribution to the community and for being a role model. She said he had raised thousands of pounds for his chosen charity, Teenage Cancer Trust, through 5km runs, sit-up challenges and reading challenges.

Raphael said: “I honestly can’t put into words how much this honour means. Everything I’ve been through, every challenge I’ve faced and everything I’ve achieved has helped shape the person I am today. It means the world to me.”

Nyasha added: “As his mum, I tell him every day how proud I am, but it is so beautiful to see him recognised nationally for the incredible young man that he is.”
