Northolt station set for summer lift

A long-delayed project to provide step-free access at Northolt station is expected to be completed this summer, following the resumption of construction works.

Bassam Mahfouz, the London Assembly member for Ealing and Hillingdon, visited the Central Line station last month (22 January 2026) to view progress on the scheme, which was first approved in January 2018. The project involves installing a lift linking street level to the platforms, making the station fully accessible for the first time.

Work began in early 2020 but was paused during the Covid-19 pandemic. After a four-year halt, construction restarted in March 2025. Once finished, the lift is intended to improve access for disabled passengers, older people, parents with buggies and others who find stairs difficult.

The scheme forms part of the Mayor of London’s wider commitment to make half of the capital’s stations step free by 2030.

Mr Mahfouz was joined on the visit by Paul Driscoll, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for climate action, and representatives from Transport for London.

Mr Mahfouz said: “Accessibility is not a luxury; it is a right. With almost four million journeys passing through the station every year, it is only right that Northolt station becomes fully accessible for everyone who relies on it.”

Councillor Paul Driscoll, Ealing Council cabinet member for climate action, added: “It was great to go to Northolt Station and see the works taking place to make the station more accessible to our residents, especially those with disabilities, people with buggies or heavy and large items and anyone who struggles with stairs.”
