The Elizabeth Line is celebrating its third birthday this weekend – and there’s plenty to cheer about the popular train service that has transformed travelling across London and beyond.
Since it launched on 24 May 2022, the £19 billion line has seen more than 600 million journeys take place, including a record-breaking 230 million trips in 2024 alone. That makes it the busiest railway in the UK, with its trains connecting commuters from Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.
For Ealing residents, the line has brought huge benefits, with stops at Southall, Hanwell, West Ealing, Ealing Broadway and Acton Main Line, slashing journey times and giving residents better access to central London and beyond.
Reflecting on its third birthday, London Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon, Bassam Mahfouz, told EALING.NEWS: “The Elizabeth Line has transformed the lives of so many across Ealing over the past 3 years. We couldn’t imagine our lives without it: slashing journey times on air conditioned carriages, lots of people happily tell me just how much they love it. No wonder it’s the nations most popular train line!”
But Mr Mahfouz says there’s been a few hiccups along the way that he’s looking to resolve for residents. He said of the new line: “But like any three year old, it’s felt like it’s had fair share of tantrums and teething issues, so I’m keen to make sure we deal with those head on. £140m of funding for the western section will transform reliability, whilst 10 new trains will offer additional frequency for many and I’m calling on those to stop at Hanwell, West Ealing and Acton Main Line.”
Mr Mahfouz has also pointed to ongoing work needed to make stations more accessible. He added: “I fought to ensure every station got step free access from day 1 and today, as the local Assembly Member, I’ll fight for safe, level access on platforms such as Ealing Broadway, as well as those improvements to see improved frequency and reliability for the years to come.”
