The latest data from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has revealed that Ealing is the number two London borough with 48.4% of household waste sent for reuse, recycling or composting. Only Bromley is above Ealing with 48.7% of its household waste sent for recycling.
The 2022-23 data was analysed by rubbish removal company Hippowaste.co.uk which found neighbouring boroughs sending less household waste for recycling with Harrow at 30%, Hillingdon at 37.1%, Hounslow at 36.2%, Hammersmith & Fulham at 25.7% and Brent at 33.4%.
The borough with the lowest amount of household waste recycling was Tower Hamlets at just 17.7%.
On average in Ealing, the collected household waste per person during the year was 224.2kg. Neighbouring borugh Harrow was 356.4kg, Hillingdon was 310.4kg, Hounslow was 296.2kg, Hammersmith & Fulham at 227.6kg and Brent at 255.5kg
Commenting on the findings, Gareth Lloyd Jones, managing director of Hippowaste.co.uk said: “This research shines a spotlight on the urgent need for all of us to rethink how we handle waste and recycling in our communities. It’s also interesting to see how much the average person produces in household waste every year, as this is often something that goes unnoticed when simply binning things becomes part of our daily routine.”
Speaking to EALING.NEWS, Councillor Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action said: “We are very pleased to be one of the top boroughs in London for recycling performance. Residents have access to a range of collection services for recycling, and our team works hard to encourage residents to reduce the amount of waste they produce by promoting reusing items and repairing broken ones.”
Councillor Driscoll added: “We are dedicated to tackling the climate crisis by reducing the amount of waste being disposed of, which in turn helps save the council money, and are very proud of our residents for embracing the services they receive. Residents are encouraged to make full use of the available recycling services including weekly food waste collections. Full details of the services available are listed on the council’s website.”
