St Benedict’s student meets Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace

An Ealing sixth-form student who completed a Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award while undergoing cancer treatment has met Prince Edward,  the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace.

Isabel Murphy, who studies at St Benedict’s School, attended a Gold Award celebration at the palace last month (20 May 2026) after completing the scheme despite weeks of daily radiotherapy for a rare form of cancer.

More than 9,000 young people from across the UK attended the event, with Isabel among a small number selected to speak personally with the Duke.

She said: “Receiving my Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has been one of the greatest achievements of my life. Throughout my cancer treatment, having the DofE to focus on gave me a sense of purpose and motivation.

“Meeting the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace was an unforgettable experience and a moment I will treasure forever.”

St Benedict’s said Isabel completed the award while continuing treatment, balancing its demands with hospital appointments and her recovery.
