Ealing NHS trust to expand stroke survivors project

A stroke rehabilitation initiative helping survivors in Ealing regain their confidence after leaving hospital is set to be expanded across London after winning a regional NHS award.

The initiative, run by London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH), which operates Ealing Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital and Central Middlesex Hospital, offers supervised exercise, health coaching and support in community venues.

Developed in partnership with the Chelsea FC Foundation and Watford FC Foundation, the trust says it plans to expand the approach across London and adapt it for people recovering from cardiac, kidney and metabolic conditions.

According to LNWH, 95 per cent of participants said they felt more confident exercising independently after completing the programme, while 85 per cent were still exercising three months later. Participants averaged four hours of physical activity each week.

Sophie Kempsford, clinical lead for stroke, neuro and early supported discharge, said: “This programme shows what working in partnership can achieve with a programme co-designed with stroke survivors and co-delivered with community organisations.

“Many of the participants have described the programme as a lifeline.”
