Hanwell Carnival visitors find calm in dedicated safe space

A dedicated safe space created for this year’s Hanwell Carnival gave families, carers and children a quiet place to escape the noise and bustle of the event.

The initiative was organised by E J Natural Vibes CIC, which set up a calm area where people could rest, regulate their emotions and take a break from the busy carnival atmosphere.

More than 100 people visited the space during the day. Supported by funding from The Freshwater Foundation, volunteers also provided fresh fruit, drinks and information about local community projects and support services.

Founder and director of E J Natural Vibes CIC, Elaisha Bedasee, said the idea was inspired by her experiences as the mother of a non-verbal autistic son.

Elaisha Bedasee, founder and director of E J Natural Vibes CIC, said: “As the mother of a non-verbal autistic son, I know first-hand how difficult large community events can be for many families.

“For the first time, I was able to fully participate in supporting my community because my son had a place where he felt safe, comfortable and understood. That experience confirmed what I have always believed that inclusion should not be an afterthought – it should be built into every event.”

Ms Bedasee said the success of the project had prompted plans for a mobile safe space and inclusion hub that could be used at festivals, schools and community events across west London.
