The popular Acton Market Reduce and Recycle Hub, which returns on 2 November 2024, has been recognised by winning a BBC Radio London Make a Difference Green Award.
Since October 2022, the project which is led by Action West London and local volunteer groups, has dedicated itself to promoting and reducing waste in Acton and nearby areas including teaching people how to repair clothes, upcycle and resharpen kitchen and garden tools.
According to the organisation, over the last two years, it has saved 693kg of unwanted clothes and shoes from going to landfill, collected 223.1kgs of small electrical items for recycling, reduced carbon emissions (CO2) by 6.2 tonnes and saved 1117.73 m3 of water.
Mary Horesh, Acton Market Reduce and Recycle Hub manager said: “We were delighted to win the BBC Radio London Make a difference Green Award. It recognises all the effort and time the volunteers put into the Reduce and Recycle hub. We rarely get to celebrate what we do at the hub so it was lovely to be invited to BBC Broadcasting House.”
Ms Horesh added: “The Reduce and Recycle hub volunteers are the cogs that make it happen. At the hub, simple things like book swaps, dropping off clothes for Traid charity, learning to mend clothes are things we can all engage with and make society less wasteful. Our hope is by leading the way it will open up more conversations with their friends, resulting in our impact is far reaching.”
