A revised plan for a major regeneration scheme in Southall has been approved by Ealing Council, paving the way for an expanded development at The Green Quarter.
The updated masterplan by property developer the Berkeley Group will increase the total number of homes on the site to more than 8,000, including private and affordable housing. Located close to Southall’s Elizabeth Line station, the development is among the largest regeneration projects currently under way in the capital.
According to the developer, the revised plans respond to changing local needs, improved transport links and growing housing demand across the capital. The proposals include new community infrastructure such as an indoor sports facility, a health centre, a community centre and a primary school.
The scheme also includes £75m in financial contributions for Southall, intended to support town centre improvements, additional primary and secondary school provision including SEND facilities, new and enhanced leisure facilities, public realm works, new allotments, bus services and employment and training initiatives.
More than 13 acres of new public open space are planned, alongside public squares and playgrounds. The developer says the project will deliver a 75% net biodiversity gain through new wetlands, tree planting and habitat creation.
Piers Clanford, chief operating officer at Berkeley Group, said: “The Green Quarter is one of London’s biggest and most ambitious regeneration sites and this enhanced masterplan is designed to unlock its full potential in the years ahead.”
The Green Quarter development has been built on land formerly known as Southall Gasworks, which, before being acquired by property developer Berkeley Homes, was used as a car park for Heathrow Airport. More than 1,200 homes have already been completed, alongside a community hub at Parkside Yards.
