Ealing Hospital is set to introduce robotic-assisted surgery later this month as part of a wider rollout of new technology across London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH).
The trust has taken delivery of two Intuitive Da Vinci surgical robots, which will be based at Ealing Hospital and Northwick Park Hospital. A third robotic system is already in use at Central Middlesex Hospital for specialist colorectal procedures.
Surgeons and theatre teams are currently training on the equipment ahead of the first operations, with more than 700 procedures a year expected to transition to robotic-assisted surgery across both sites by the end of next year.
Oscar Smyth, senior transformation lead at LNWH, said: “We are planning to convert more than 700 procedures per year to robotic-assisted surgery across both sites by the end of next year.”
Under the plans, Ealing Hospital will focus on high-volume procedures such as hernia repair and gallbladder surgery, while Northwick Park Hospital will handle more complex cases.
Viv Sathianathan, divisional medical director for surgery, said the technology would enable “greater precision” and support improved patient outcomes, including faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays.
