Pupils at St Augustine’s Priory in Ealing have earned the internationally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag award, celebrating their dedication to environmental sustainability throughout the school year.
Led by sustainability lead Miss Lee, the all-girls Catholic independent school – welcoming boys in its Nursery – has made sustainability a cornerstone of school life. The student-run eco-committee followed the Eco-Schools’ seven-step framework to evaluate and enhance the school’s ecological footprint. Their efforts centred on three key areas: litter, waste, and water.
The committee’s year-long action plan included regular litter-picking drives, the installation of new recycling stations across campus and rainwater harvesting for the care of the school’s grounds.
Headteacher Christine Macallister praised the students’ achievements. She said: “At St Augustine’s Priory, we believe in empowering our pupils to lead with purpose and integrity. The achievements of our Eco-Committee are a shining example of what young people can accomplish when they are given the tools and encouragement to drive change. We are incredibly proud of their initiative, teamwork, and the lasting impact they’ve made on our school and community.”
Miss Lee added: “It has been a joy to watch the pupils take ownership of such an important cause. Their creativity and passion for the environment have inspired us all.”
Pupil Thea expressed her pride in the award. She said: “”I am so proud of our achievement! Having been part of the Eco-Committee and Eco-Club, I have loved learning about sustainability and how we all can make a difference to the world we live in, no matter how big or small.”
Eco-Schools England manager Adam Flint commended the students’ passion and urged wider climate action inspired by their example.
