A multiple Grammy Award-winning mix engineer visited Ealing’s University of West London (UWL) to discuss the future of music production with students and staff.
Spike Stent, whose career spans more than 40 years, has mixed albums including Massive Attack’s Blue Lines and Björk’s Post, and worked with artists such as Madonna, U2, Beyoncé and Harry Styles.
During his visit to UWL’s London College of Music, he took part in a panel discussion on AI-assisted workflows and met students supported by his scholarship, established five years ago to back emerging mixing talent.
Mr Stent was joined by Dr Dan Pratt, course leader for BA Recording, Mixing and Production and MA Record Production, and senior lecturer Paul Borg. The discussion focused on how artificial intelligence is reshaping technical processes, while creativity remains central to the role of the mix engineer.
Mr Stent said: “What a great day. I really enjoyed the Q&A and sharing thoughts, experiences and approaches.”
Student Matthew Jerry Kalapura said: “To have him listen to my music and compliment my work is mind blowing.”
