A project from Ealing’s University of West London supporting the wellbeing of critical care nurses has been shortlisted for a national NHS award.
The university has worked with London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH), which runs Ealing Hospital, to introduce structured wellbeing support into postgraduate training for critical care nurses.
The project, Caring for Those Who Care, has been shortlisted in the Staff Wellbeing and Culture category at the 2026 HSJ Awards, with the winners due to be announced on 19 November 2026.
It was created by Melanconia Duval-Pazzaglia, senior lecturer practitioner in critical care at UWL, and has been used within the LNWH’s postgraduate critical care programme over the past year.
The programme incorporates elements of the Professional Nurse Advocate role, providing nurses with support and supervision around their professional practice and wellbeing.
Ms Duval-Pazzaglia said: “The project focuses on embedding key elements of the Professional Nurse Advocate role into the postgraduate course, with the aim of providing structured wellbeing support to critical care nurses throughout what is often an exceptionally demanding period.
“At the moment this is the only postgraduate course to have done so in the UK, and it is even more unique that it is a partnership between the NHS and higher education.”
