Ealing Conservatives have announced their candidate for the upcoming North Acton ward by-election.
Sally Gorman, who has lived in the area for 30 years, will stand for the party on 25 June 2026 after previously contesting the North Acton ward in the 7 May Ealing Council elections.
The by-election was triggered after newly-elected Green Party councillor Simon Anthony resigned days after the elections, citing health reasons.
Ms Gorman previously finished eighth out of 17 candidates in the ward, receiving 551 votes.
In a statement announcing Ms Gorman’s candidacy, local Conservatives criticised the cost of holding the by-election, claiming it would cost taxpayers “tens of thousands of pounds”.
The party said Ms Gorman would campaign on issues including cleaner streets, community safety and improving the local area.
The Conservatives also pointed to their recent gains in North Greenford during the local elections earlier this month, where the party won seats from Labour after the ward had been held by the party for more than 30 years.
In their statement, the Conservatives said the by-election was about choosing “a vocal and effective voice for Acton on the council”.
Labour has selected former Ealing Council chief whip Gareth Shaw as its candidate for the by-election. Mr Shaw lost his seat earlier this month after standing for Labour in South Acton, having previously represented Walpole ward.
The Liberal Democrats have selected Abdi Ahmed, a lifelong borough resident who works as a parliamentary researcher for Liberal Democrat MP Liz Jarvis, specialising in local government finance, public services and cost-of-living issues.
The elections saw Labour retain control of Ealing Council despite losing 10 councillors, including two cabinet members and the party’s chief whip.
Labour won 46 of the council’s 70 seats, down from the 56 it held before the election. The Liberal Democrats increased their presence on the council from eight councillors to 13, while the Conservatives won five seats, the Green Party secured five seats and one independent councillor was elected.
Candidates from other parties, as well as independents interested in standing, have until 4pm on 29 May 2026 to submit their nomination papers.
The statement of persons nominated — confirming the final list of candidates standing in the election — will then be published by Ealing Council at 5pm on the same day.
