Ryan Blake’s stoppage-time winner condemned Hanwell Town to a painful 1-0 defeat against Berkhamsted on Bank Holiday Monday (31 August 2026).
Despite the Geordies looking comfortable for much of the game – and arguably deserving a victory themselves – the home side capitalised on a sustained spell of late pressure to sneak it in the final moments.
Hanwell certainly started the game brighter and would have been several goals in front had it not been for some heroic Berkhamsted defending. In the first 17 minutes alone, Willem Tomlinson and Eddie Cooper both saw efforts blocked; whilst Comrade keeper, Hubert Graczyk, did brilliantly to deny Henry Snee and Gabe George.
With Hanwell not managing to capitalise though, Berkhamsted had a superb opportunity to break the deadlock right before half time. JJ Lacey found himself clear on goal but selflessly squared the ball to Ricardo German who failed to convert.
Immediately after the break, Lacey nearly made amends after his lovely touch put Luke Andrews clear, but his subsequent shot crept agonisingly past the post. On the hour mark, German then had his own redemption opportunity but also saw his attempt flash wide.
Snee and Cooper both had speculative chances to win it for Hanwell but with their shots going over the bar, Berkhamsted spent the game’s final moments pushing for a winner.
The ball was eventually threaded to substitute, Blake, who found himself with an open goal on the six-yard box and made no mistake from close range.
The Geordies have now suffered three league defeats in a row but will look to bounce back during their FA Cup tie against Flackwell Heath on Friday evening, before travelling to Frome Town on 12 September.
