New art installations coming to Southall

Southall is set to see a series of new public artworks installed across the town this spring as part of an Ealing Council-led regeneration project.

The council has announced plans for murals, sculptures and other installations across six locations under the Destination Southall public art programme, funded through the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The project aims to celebrate Southall’s history and multicultural identity while improving the look and feel of busy routes and public spaces.

Sites earmarked for artworks include the South Road overbridge outside Southall station, the Merrick Road foot and cycle bridge, Hayes Gateway Bridge on Southall Broadway, the Norwood Road bridge over the Grand Union Canal, the courtyard of the Dominion Centre and Library, and selected pavements and community spaces.

Seven artists have been commissioned, several of whom have strong local connections. Haffendi Anuar is due to create a layered sculptural mural at the Dominion Centre and Library, incorporating seating designed for rest and reflection. Prem Sahib, who grew up in Southall, is developing a work inspired by cinema seating and local social spaces, with the final location to be decided through community consultation.

Other works include miniature three-dimensional models of Southall landmarks on Hayes Gateway Bridge by TK Hay, and a “public gallery” on the Norwood Road canal bridge by Pablo Thomas of BUHO Studios. That installation will feature 13 painted artworks depicting moments from Southall’s history and identity, with animated versions accessible via QR codes. Two separate pieces are planned for the Merrick Road bridge: a mural of painted portraits and residents’ stories by Gurdish Haugsdal, and illustrated portraits by Raj Dhunna at the bridge entrances. Shirin Naveed will install functional street furniture inspired by the Punjabi manji outside 118–122 The Broadway, co-designed with residents.

The artists were selected by a panel including council representatives and local organisations such as Southall Community Alliance and Southall Black Sisters.

Council leader Peter Mason said the project was intended to build pride and attract visitors, while the council’s cabinet member for thriving communities, Blerina Hashani, said community involvement would be central to shaping the final works.

A public engagement event will take place at the Dominion Centre and Library on Saturday 17 January, from 1pm to 9pm, where residents can meet the artists and contribute ideas.
