Save West Middlesex Golf Club petition tops 2,500 ahead of Ealing Council decision

Ealing Council’s cabinet is due to decide today (9 July 2026) whether to approve plans that could reshape the future of West Middlesex Golf Club, as a petition opposing the proposals has attracted more than 2,500 signatures in less than 48 hours.

Cabinet members are being asked to approve plans for the council to surrender the club’s existing 76-year lease before granting a new lease running until September 2027. The proposals would also give developer Greenford Road Limited, which already holds a controlling interest in the club, an option to buy 2.27 acres of the site.

West Middlesex Golf Club says the shortened lease would leave it unable to renew memberships beyond April 2027, forcing the club into insolvency within a year and putting 27 jobs at risk. The club also says it was not consulted before the agreement was reached with the council.

A Change.org petition, Preserve West Middlesex Golf Club for the Community, was launched on Tuesday (7 July) and had passed 2,500 signatures by Thursday (9 July 2026) morning after attracting more than 2,000 signatures in its first 24 hours.

The Southall club has operated since 1893 on a course designed by Open champion James Braid and still hosts an Amateur World Ranking Event. The club says more than 5,000 individual golfers play more than 15,000 rounds there each year, while its clubhouse regularly hosts weddings, funerals, charity events and community functions.

Alex Finch, general manager of West Middlesex Golf Club and spokesperson for the campaign, said: “This club is a pillar of the West London community with over 5,000 individual golfers a year, and many more who attend our clubhouse. We have started this petition to preserve the club for our members and visitors, as well as the 27 members of staff who work here and love the club.

“West Middlesex Golf Club is an incredible green space, and a positive environment for all who attend. It provides leisure, health and social benefits which surpasses a typical sports club.

“We have been inspired by receiving over 2,000 signatures in the first 24 hours. However, we are not particularly surprised. Generations have enjoyed this club and we are ingrained into the community. Future plans for the club’s land do not consider us and threaten to decimate our community.”

In a statement to EALING.NEWS, an Ealing Council spokesperson previously said: “Cabinet will consider a report relating to the lease arrangements for West Middlesex Golf Course, at its meeting on 9 July. This proposes the surrender of the existing lease and the grant of a new short-term lease until September 2027, alongside an option regarding a small part of the wider site.

“The proposal in the report is intended to resolve ongoing legal issues and address issues arising from the golf club’s financial difficulties. Some aspects of those matters are the subject of ongoing legal proceedings and it would not be appropriate for the council to comment further while those proceedings remain active.

“The report is not seeking a decision on the long-term future of the golf course. Any future proposals for the site would be subject to the appropriate decision-making processes. We recognise the long history of golf on this site and understand there are strong views about any future use. We want to reiterate that no decision has been taken in this regard.

“The report, and its recommendations, are now in the public domain and Cabinet will consider all relevant information before reaching any decision. Interested parties can follow the Cabinet debate and decision-making process.”
