London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH), which runs Ealing Hospital, Central Middlesex Hospital and Northwick Park Hospital, has paid out more than £1.5m in compensation linked to radiology errors over the past three years, new figures show.
Data obtained by Medical Negligence Assist reveals that the trust paid £1,611,125 between 2022 and 2025 following five radiology-related claims, with the highest number recorded in 2023/24. Radiology errors can include missed, delayed or misinterpreted scans and may result in delayed diagnoses or inappropriate treatment.
Nationally, radiology negligence claims have risen by about 30% over the past decade, according to NHS data, making it one of the fastest-growing areas of medical negligence. Since 2020, more than 2,100 radiology error claims have been brought against NHS trusts across the UK, with compensation payments totalling more than £230m.
Sophie Cope, a medical negligence solicitor at JF Law, said diagnostic imaging played a “vital role” in modern medicine and that failures could have long-lasting consequences for patients, including missed cancers and untreated fractures.
She said: “These investigations are often crucial in determining the correct diagnosis and treatment pathway. If a scan is missed, misread, delayed or performed to an inadequate standard, the effects on a patient’s health can be long-lasting and, in some cases, life-altering.”
Speaking to EALING.NEWS, an LNWH spokesperson said: “Although misdiagnosis claims are relatively rare given the number of patients we treat in our hospitals, we review every case and use each as a learning opportunity to improve patient safety. That includes continuing to invest in staff training, robust systems, and clinical processes to support accurate and timely diagnosis.
“In cases where misdiagnosis has been found to cause harm, we work with NHS Resolution to come to an appropriate settlement. We always strive to provide the best possible care and sincerely apologise where that has fallen short to the patient and families concerned.”
