An 11-year-old schoolboy from Hanwell is preparing to set off on a week-long cycling and camping journey to Paris, aiming to raise £1,000 towards the rebuilding costs of his local 7th Hanwell Scouts hut, The Warren based in Trumpers Way.
On Sunday (20 July 2025), Hector Cairney and his uncle Ant will take the ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe before setting off on their bikes for the 200km+ ride, travelling self-supported across France with all their kit – tents, food and camping gear – packed into panniers. They plan to arrive in the French capital by Saturday (26 July 2025).
The 7th Hanwell Scouts are hoping to raise up to £390,000 to transform the 53-year-old building into a safe, modern and welcoming space for young people and the local community.
Speaking to EALING.NEWS, Hector said: “It means a lot to me because it’s a big challenge, and I’ve never done anything like this before. I loved being in Beavers and Cubs, and by raising this money for the hut rebuild I hope me and my friends can enjoy Scouts a lot more too.”
Hector, who has just finished his final year at St Mark’s Primary School in Hanwell and will start at Elthorne Park High School in September, has gradually gathered his equipment piece by piece, with birthday and Christmas presents helping to prepare him for the journey.
