Southall trainees take first steps into construction

Last month, West London College, in partnership with the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC), delivered a five-day drylining programme designed to boost skills, employment and inclusion in the construction sector.

Running from 7–11 April 2025 at Southall Community College’s specialist construction and green skills centre, the course formed part of the Construction Skills Training Service – an initiative launched earlier this year to tackle local skills shortages and support people into work.

Eight participants, referred by neighbouring local councils, took part in the course from a wide range of ages and backgrounds.

The programme offered a mix of theory and practical training, covering drylining systems, site safety, surface preparation, plasterboard fitting and teamwork. All participants completed the course, with several expressing interest in further training or employment.

Construction tutor Matt Morgan said: “The group showed dedication and commitment throughout the week. They were enthusiastic and determined to succeed and I look forward to hearing what about what they do next.”

Daljit Bains, director of business development at West London College, added: “This is what happens when colleges, councils and developers work together to deliver real opportunity.”
