After more than 120 years, family-owned and run Daniel of Ealing is calling time on the borough and has commenced its closing down sale.
In a statement, the retailer cited “rising costs and challenging market conditions have led to the difficult decision to close the historic store”.
Its remaining flagship store in Windsor continues to operate.
The West Ealing department store, which first opened in 1901 on 96 Uxbridge Road by Walter James Daniel, was demolished over 20 years ago and replaced with flats and retail units, but never returned to its original site. Instead, during the rebuilding, Daniel downsized its retail offering and moved further up to 132-138 Uxbridge Road where it has remained.
At its height in Ealing, Daniel was renowned for its wide selection of prams, clothing, furniture, haberdashery, millinery and even had a restaurant.
Over its 124 years, Daniel expanded from Ealing to Windsor and even had stores in Reading, Newbury, Cardiff, Ebbw Vale and Chiswick.
No details on the exact closing date have been revealed for the Ealing store nor has Daniel confirmed how many staff are impacted.
Announcing its closure and the start of its final sale, the retailer said: “Daniel of Ealing is holding a final clearance sale to give customers one last opportunity to take advantage of incredible discounts. All stock is being cleared from the Ealing store, with bargain prices available.”
It added: “Daniel of Ealing has been a nostalgic pillar of the community for over a century, and while this chapter is sadly coming to an end, the store’s legacy will live on fondly in the memories of its customers. The Daniel of Windsor flagship store in the county of Berkshire continues, as well as the online store: danielstores.co.uk”
