Hanwell Town started their defence of the London Senior Cup on Tuesday night (11 November 2025) by resisting a Charlton Athletic Development Squad fightback to move into the next round.
The Geordies, who lifted the trophy in August after beating Brentford B in the rearranged final, took a two goal lead in the first half thanks to strikes from Harry Rice and Alfie Pendlebury.
Addicks striker Pat Casey, who missed an open goal early in the second half, scored a quickfire brace to put the south Londoners back onto level terms only for Mo Bettamer’s curling effort to win it for the Geordies 15 minutes from time.
Chris Moore took the opportunity to rotate his side and try out players in different positions, making eight changes to the side that beat Tiverton. Kamaron English, Gianni Crichlow, Elijah Oladunjoye, Ade Shokunbi, Ryan Cole, Bradley Clayton and Harry Rice all came into the team with Will Hall coming in for his third debut for the club. Bettamer, Roberto Nditi, Joe Wilson, Eddie Cooper and Jordy Mongoy took their place on the bench as Harry Seabrook, Dan Carr and Callum Woodcock were rested.
English and Crichlow, usually used to playing further forward, were deployed as wing backs with Cole playing in a deeper role than his usual forward position.
After surviving a quick start from Charlton, Hanwell took the lead as Rice latched onto an underhit backpass to race through on goal before slotting the ball home after just five minutes.
Hanwell were the better side through much of the first half and deservedly doubled their lead as Pendlebury reacted quickest to turn the ball home after fine work from Dwayne Duncan to win the ball from Oladunjoye’s long throw with 30 minutes gone.
The Geordies felt comfortable with a two goal cushion and dropped their tempo, allowing the young Addicks back into the game.
Charlton should have pulled one back early into the second half after a Will Hall backpass was intercepted and, with Sam Beasant out of position, Casey had an open goal to aim at but, inexplicably, fired high and wide.
The young Addick made up for it by firing a fine shot into the far corner of the net from the edge of the area 18 minutes later to allow the south Londoners back into the game. Four minutes later, Casey had his second as he turned the ball home to level the scores with just under 20 minutes left to play.
Hanwell switched back on again and, three minutes later Mongoy and Bettamer combined with the latter finding space to drill a curling shot into the top corner of the net with 75 minutes on the clock.
Charlton weren’t giving up without a fight and Casey had another chance deep into stoppage time but his effort went wide and the Geordies marched on through to the next round where they will play either Sporting Bengal or Erith and Belvedere away from home.
On Saturday, Hanwell make the trip to South Wales when they face National League North side Merthyr Town in the second round of the FA Trophy.
