On a bitterly cold evening in Surrey, Hanwell Town’s winning streak froze on Tuesday (18 November 2025) as they shivered to a 2-1 loss against Chertsey Town.
Following their FA Trophy heroics on Saturday, the Geordies were looking to make it five consecutive victories. But despite controlling large periods of the game at Chertsey’s Alwyns Lane, they were just too profligate in possession and struggled to break down a well organised home side.
Also fresh from a successful weekend that saw the Curfews beat Evesham United 4-0 – with all four of their goals being scored in the first 16 minutes – Chertsey again got off to a good start and nudged themselves ahead in the twelfth minute. Jack Mazzone converting with an easy close-range finish.
With their noses in front, the home side settled into a good defensive shape and looked dangerous on the counter-attack. So whilst Hanwell did give the ball away cheaply, Chertsey deserve credit for marshalling themselves effectively.
In contrast to the weather, the game thawed into a heated affair and nearly reached boiling point when in the 39th minute, Oli McCoy was lucky to not see red after a poor challenge on Hanwell’s Joe Wilson.
The Geordies perfectly channelled their frustration at the referee’s decision though. Just before half time, Wilson delivered a lovely cross that found Alfie Pendlebury, who scored with a superb glancing header to make it all square at the break.
But soon after the interval, Hanwell were behind again. Defender, Dwayne Duncan, being unfortunate to see the ball dribble into his own net after trying to tidy up a Daryl Harisson cross. Hanwell captain, Sam Beasant, then pulled off a brilliant sprawling save to deny Bradley Wilson from pulling the Curfews further in front.
In search of an equaliser, the innovative Dan Carr was a handful on the left-hand side for Hanwell and created several second half opportunities; but in truth, Chertsey were worth their 2-1 victory.
Speaking after the match, Hanwell manager, Chris Moore, said his team’s performance was “just not good enough” as attentions now shift to Saturday’s home game against Wimborne Town. Tickets can be found here.
