Opinion: Budget relief welcomed for Ealing and West London businesses – but more support needed

Measures in today’s (28 October 2026) Budget to cut business rates and support innovation have been welcomed as a boost for small and medium-sized businesses in Ealing and across West London, according to Alan Rides, chief executive of West London Chambers of Commerce.

Mr Rides said the relief would help firms manage costs, but warned that rising employment costs and skills shortages remained serious challenges. He called for continued investment in apprenticeships, transport infrastructure and international trade to help local businesses recruit, invest and grow.

“We welcome the Chancellor’s recognition of the pressures facing small and medium-sized businesses, particularly the announcement of lower business rates for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses. These sectors are vital to West London’s economy, and reducing one of their biggest fixed costs will provide much-needed relief.

“The additional support packages and transitional relief for businesses affected by the rates revaluation are also welcome, helping firms manage costs at a time when many are already operating under significant financial pressure.

“We are encouraged by the Government’s commitment to innovation, research and development, and investment in AI infrastructure, alongside measures to improve access to finance. West London has a thriving community of entrepreneurs and SMEs, and ensuring they can access funding, embrace new technologies and expand into international markets is essential to driving economic growth.

“However, the real test will be whether these measures translate into tangible benefits for businesses on the ground. Many of our members continue to face rising employment costs, skills shortages and challenges recruiting and retaining staff.

“With Heathrow, major infrastructure projects and international trade at the heart of West London’s economy, we need continued investment in skills, apprenticeships and transport infrastructure to ensure local businesses and communities benefit from future growth.

“West London Chambers of Commerce will continue to work with businesses and policymakers to ensure that the needs of SMEs remain at the forefront of the Government’s economic agenda. Ultimately, businesses need stability, confidence and the right conditions to invest, create jobs and grow.”
