Woman and child die after Hanwell park water tragedy

A woman and a young child have died after getting into difficulty in the water at Elthorne Park in Hanwell, police have said.

Emergency services were called to the park shortly before 4.30pm on Saturday (25 April 2026) after reports of two people in distress in the water. The pair were recovered but were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police said the woman and child are believed to be related, though formal identification has not yet taken place. Officers are working to trace and support their next of kin.

Detective Superintendent Pete Thackray, from the Met’s West Area Command Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a woman and her young child have lost their lives. Our thoughts are with their loved ones.”

He added that first responders and members of the public had done their best in “an incredibly challenging situation”.

Police said initial indications suggest the deaths are not being treated as suspicious, while inquiries continue into the full circumstances of what happened.
