Firefighters have issued another warning about e-bike and e-scooter safety after a flat fire in Perivale left six people in hospital late on Thursday night (7 May 2026).
Half of a first-floor flat in Haymill Close was damaged in the blaze, while the flat’s front door and communal landing were completely destroyed.
Two adults and two children escaped the property after being alerted by a smoke alarm before crews arrived. Two neighbouring residents also evacuated and climbed onto scaffolding, where they were later led to safety by firefighters. Four adults and two children suffering from smoke inhalation were taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service.
The London Fire Brigade received the first of six emergency calls at 12.11am on Friday (8 May). Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Ealing, Wembley and Northolt fire stations attended. The fire was brought under control by 1.59am.
The cause of the blaze is believed to have been the failure of a lithium battery used on an e-scooter.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson urged residents not to store e-bikes or e-scooters in hallways or near front doors, warning they can block escape routes if they catch fire. The Brigade also highlighted the importance of working smoke alarms and heat detectors in homes.
