Oshogatsu celebration in Acton draws large crowd

More than 200 people attended a  Japanese New Year celebration in Acton earlier this month (3 January 2026), highlighting the popularity of Japanese cultural events and community-led initiatives in the capital.

The Oshogatsu event was organised by Miyabi Community and supported by the Embassy of Japan in the UK. It was held at London Wasps FC on Twyford Avenue in Acton and brought together Japanese residents, families, and members of the public to mark one of the most significant dates in the Japanese calendar.

Oshogatsu, which traditionally focuses on reflection and renewal, was marked through a programme of cultural activities and food. Organisers said attendees included long-standing residents, newly arrived families and people with an interest in Japanese culture. Miyabi Community said some guests travelled from outside London to attend the event.

Local political representatives and diplomatic figures were also present. Ealing Broadway ward councillor Seema Kumar said: “You are an essential part of the cultural, social, and economic life of our borough. Your traditions, values, and community spirit enrich our borough in countless ways, and we are truly grateful for everything you bring to our shared home.”

The Embassy of Japan in the UK also welcomed the event. Yuichiro Mori, counsellor in the public relations and culture section, addressed attendees and said: “I hope all of you will enjoy today’s event, and I wish that the year 2026 brings you much happiness and success.”

A spokesperson for Miyabi Community said the level of attendance reflected interest in spaces that support cultural exchange and community connection. The spokesperson said: “The response has been extremely encouraging, particularly learning that people travelled from across the country to attend.”

The Oshogatsu celebration forms part of Miyabi Community’s wider programme of cultural events. The organisation said it is planning further activities, including a Matsuri festival in 2026.
