The catwalk is about to get a shake-up in Southall, as models with learning disabilities from across the borough take their place under the lights next month (5 September 2025) in a show aiming to rewrite the rules of fashion – and challenge the industry’s tendency to sideline them.
The event, part of Ealing Mencap’s 60th anniversary celebration, has been created in partnership with Models of Diversity, a charity that advocates for better representation in fashion, beauty and the media.
The runway at Parkside Yards will feature Ealing Mencap members, disability advocates and models who, in the words of the organisers, “defy convention”. Styled by Marion Oke, the fashion show will showcase designs from leading fashion houses.
Marcus, who will be taking part, told EALING.NEWS: “I wanted to join the fashion show because I think I’m a cool person. I’m feeling okay but a little nervous because I don’t know how it’s going to look. I love having my picture taken, so I am looking forward to that. I am also happy to do some dancing.”
Steven, another participant who will also be strutting his stuff, added: “I joined the fashion show because I want to perform in front of an audience. I am excited to do the cat walk. I am feeling a bit nervous. I think the fashion show will help me feel included. I am looking forward to seeing how many people come. I hope the fashion show goes really well and everyone claps at the end.”
Nik Demetriades, Ealing Mencap’s chief executive, added: “Our fashion show is about more than clothes – it’s about empowerment, visibility, and celebrating the unique personalities of our members. We want everyone to see that fashion and fun are for everyone, regardless of anything else.”
Angel Sinclair, founder and CEO of Models of Diversity, said: “It’s an honour to collaborate with Ealing Mencap on such a meaningful event. We’ve spent over 16 years pushing for visibility and change in the fashion industry — and events like this are exactly where that change becomes real.”
The evening will also feature performances from the Me-Time Pop Choir, appearances by celebrity guests and influencers from the learning disability community.
