An e-bike fire on Saturday evening (19 July 2025), has prompted renewed safety warnings from the London Fire Brigade after a blaze damaged flats in Hanwell.
The fire broke out on Jasper Avenue and destroyed half of a first-floor flat in a residential block. A small section of a second-floor flat was also affected. There were no injuries reported. Fire investigators believe the blaze was caused by a battery failure linked to overcharging and the use of an incorrect charger.
Firefighters were called at 6:09pm and had the fire under control by 6:53pm. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Ealing, Southall, Acton and Heston attended the scene.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “If you own an e-bike or e-scooter, there are a number of things you can do to help keep yourself and those around you safe. It is vital that you do not store or charge the device on an escape route such as a hallway. We have seen incidents where people have had to jump from windows or be rescued by firefighters because their escape route has been blocked by fire or smoke.”
They added: “When charging your e-bike or e-scooter, make sure you are using the correct charger. Mismatching the charger increases the risk of fire. It’s also important not to overcharge and to unplug the charger once it’s completed charging. Never charge an e-bike or e-scooter unattended or whilst you’re sleeping.”
The Brigade is urging people to review its #ChargeSafe guidance online.
