The number of people employed in Ealing and its seven towns has fallen by 1,830 over the past year, according to the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures.
Data for January 2026 revealed 181,707 employees on payroll in the borough, down 1% on the same month last year. In the most recent month, businesses reported a further fall of 232, a month-on-month drop of 0.1%.
The local figures come as UK unemployment rose to 5.2% in the three months to December 2025, its highest rate in nearly five years, according to the ONS, while London unemployment rose to 7.6%.
Across nearby boroughs Brent recorded a 1.4% annual fall in payroll jobs, while Hammersmith and Fulham reported a 1.5% decrease which the ONS data revealed.
The analysis of the Ealing ONS data by employment and pay app WageSight puts Ealing 11th out of 19 in London for employment change, placing it among the weaker performers.
Paul Hebden, WageSight director, said: “The latest figures underline the continued pressure on employment in Ealing. Payroll remains down compared with last year, and recent month-on-month data suggests employers are still cutting back.”
