Ealing Council sets out 20-minute neighbourhoods guidance

Ealing Council has announced it has set out guidance for its vision of 20-minute neighbourhoods across the borough and its seven towns.

The guidance aims to help its key stakeholders including developers to integrate 20-minute neighbourhood concepts into regeneration projects to benefit local communities.

According to the council, it is has created guidance on how it seeks to meet its vision of where people in the borough are within a short walk or bike ride from essential services they need including doctor’s surgeries, parks and shops.

The council said that its guidance seeks to recognise the uniqueness of each of the borough’s 7 towns and local needs will change over time. It is also based on feedback it has gathered from various consultations and surveys it has had with locals over recent years.

It says the ‘Our 7 Towns – guidance on 20-minute neighbourhoods in Ealing’ is “designed with the needs of residents in mind, and once implemented would offer a long list of potential benefits.”

It added that without the need to drive or use public transport, the 20-minute neighbourhoods could “boost local economies, improve residents’ health and wellbeing, offer a better quality of life, and make the air cleaner. Ultimately, it will help tackle climate change by reducing emissions.”

Leader of Ealing Council, Councillor Peter Mason said: “Through 20-minute neighbourhoods, we want to create communities where your daily needs are all within a short walk or cycle from your home, whether that’s your local GP surgery, supermarkets and corner shops, or green and open space, we want our local neighbourhoods and communities to be truly accessible.”

Councillor Shital Manro, the council’s cabinet member for good growth and new homes, added: “We are an ambitious borough focused on growth, but we’ve always been clear that it must be the right kind of growth – the type that delivers the social infrastructure and amenities that our communities need.”
