Students from Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School in Greenford have been recognised for their volunteer work during a pilgrimage to Rome, receiving awards at this year’s Love in Action Volunteering Awards run by Caritas Westminster.
The awards, which celebrate outstanding service across the Roman Catholic Diocese of Westminster, highlighted the students’ work during the Jubilee of People with Disabilities. Partnering with Caritas St Joseph’s, the young volunteers supported disabled pilgrims throughout the trip, assisting with practical tasks in often difficult conditions.
Teachers said the students spent long hours pushing wheelchairs in the heat, helping with drama performances and offering comfort to fellow travellers who faced physical and emotional challenges during the pilgrimage. Their nominator said: “Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they threw themselves into all the tasks they were given with enthusiasm and love.”
The awards ceremony, which took place last week (26 November 2025) was led by Bishop Paul McAleenan, chair of Caritas Westminster, with a welcome from the charity’s director, Richard Harries.
Staff from Caritas Westminster said the group had demonstrated a level of patience, gentleness and respect that made a significant impact on the wider group of pilgrims.
