Notting Hill & Ealing High School pupils have been crowned national debating champions after winning a prestigious competition at the Cambridge Union.
A team of five Year 6 pupils from the school’s junior section won the Cicero Cup, a national debating contest for children aged 10 and 11 organised by education charity The Noisy Classroom.
The Ealing pupils battled through three rounds at the finals in Cambridge, including a debate on whether the Government should continue funding the arts.
In one of the competition’s toughest challenges, teams had to prepare arguments for both sides of the motion before discovering which position they would be asked to defend. Competitors also faced impromptu debates and questions from the audience.
The victory marks the first time Notting Hill & Ealing High School has won the trophy.
Kate Bevan, head of the junior school at Notting Hill & Ealing High School, said: “Developing a strong pupil voice and building that core confidence is at the heart of everything we do.
“In an age of AI, the ability to process information and use our voices in real time is an incredibly important human skill.”
