The Ealing Green Party has selected Marijn van de Geer as its candidate for next month’s North Acton ward by-election.
Ms van de Geer previously stood for the party in East Acton ward during this month’s local elections on 7 May 2026. The by-election on 25 June 2026 was triggered after newly-elected Green Party councillor Simon Anthony resigned days after the election, citing health reasons.
Speaking after her selection, Ms van de Geer said: “I am thrilled to be selected as the Green Party candidate for North Acton. I am ready to go out there and listen to the residents, learn more about their needs and concerns, and get to work for them after June 25th.”
Councillor Clare Welsby, group leader, Ealing Green Party told EALING.NEWS: “Marijn van de Geer will bring her passion and commitment to people and planet, capacity to listen and engage with residents and groups to the council ensuring local people are heard and supported, working in partnership within the council where possible and challenging where needed.
“I look forward to campaigning in North Acton with Marijn over the coming weeks.”
Neil Reynolds, chair of the Ealing Green Party, added: “I’m delighted Marijn van de Geer has been selected. We’ve had a very competitive process and Marijn has already been on the doorstep in North Acton and residents understand it’s between us and Labour and it will be really close.
“I’m confident Marijn’s commitment to a greener fairer North Acton will make the difference on June 25th.”
Labour has selected former Ealing Council chief whip Gareth Shaw as its candidate for the by-election. Mr Shaw lost his seat earlier this month to Green Party candidate Husam Alharasheh after standing for Labour in South Acton, having previously represented Walpole ward.
The Liberal Democrats have selected Abdi Ahmed, a lifelong borough resident who works as a parliamentary researcher for Liberal Democrat MP Liz Jarvis, specialising in local government finance, public services and cost-of-living issues.
The Conservatives have announced long-time local resident Sally Gorman as their candidate for the by-election.
The elections earlier this month saw Labour retain control of Ealing Council despite losing 10 councillors, including two cabinet members and the party’s chief whip.
Labour won 46 of the council’s 70 seats, down from the 56 it held before the election. The Liberal Democrats increased their presence on the council from eight councillors to 13, while the Conservatives won five seats, the Green Party secured five seats and one independent councillor was elected.
Candidates from other parties, as well as independents interested in standing, have until 4pm on 29 May 2026 to submit their nomination papers.
The statement of persons nominated — confirming the final list of candidates standing in the election — will then be published by Ealing Council at 5pm on the same day.
