Ealing man, 85, dies after hospital assault as murder inquiry launched

Detectives have launched a murder investigation after an 85-year-old man from Ealing died a week after being assaulted at Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith.

Andrew Farmer, who had been receiving treatment at the hospital, was attacked by another patient on 18 September 2025. He suffered serious injuries and died on 25 September 2025. The Metropolitan Police said his family were being supported by specialist officers.

A man was arrested at the scene shortly after the incident. He was later named as Anatoliy Podmazko, 70, of no fixed address, who was charged two days later with grievous bodily harm. He is due to appear at Isleworth crown court on 17 October 2025. Detectives confirmed they are working with the Crown Prosecution Service as the investigation continues.

Mr Farmer’s partner of six decades, Paul Wrigley, described him as a man of intellect and warmth whose passions ranged from opera to the landscape of Devon.  He said: “My partner through thick and thin for 60 years. Now sadly missed. An Oxford First – whatever he touched, he touched deeply – opera, Devon topography, the underprivileged. Scholarly but with a wry sense of humour. Rest now, my dear friend.”

Det Insp Kirsten Hadleigh, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts remain with Andrew’s family and friends at this undoubtedly difficult time. We remain in close contact with Andrew’s loved ones and are keeping them up to date with the progress of our investigation.”
