A long-standing Tesco Express store on Greenford Road in Greenford closed its doors on Wednesday (29 October 2025) and is set to relocate to a smaller site in the town’s Broadway in the coming months.
The branch, which opened as a Tesco in 1967, has served shoppers for nearly six decades. The company confirmed that it plans to open a new Express store nearby on The Broadway, occupying the former Boots pharmacy, which closed in January 2024. All current employees of the Greenford Road branch have been offered the opportunity to work at the planned new location or at other nearby Tesco stores.
A Tesco spokesperson told EALING.NEWS: “We’re always looking for the best ways to serve local communities and we’re excited to be opening a new Tesco Express store on The Broadway, Greenford. We will keep the local community updated with our plans as we get closer to opening.”
The existing Greenford Road building has a notable past. It was originally opened in 1937 as the Granada Theatre, designed by architects Dixon, Braddock & Masey with interiors by the celebrated designer Theodore Komisarjevsky. The cinema seated around 2,000 people and hosted both film screenings and live performances before closing in 1966 and being converted to a Tesco the following year.
There has been no official confirmation from Tesco about the future of the former site but locals have suggested that the building – along with its adjoining car park – could be set for redevelopment into residential flats.
