Baristas, barbers and other local businesses in Ealing have helped to inspire a series of six new public artworks to brighten high streets in the borough.
The Poetry High Streets project, from Ealing Council and supported by the government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, pairs poetry with visual installations. A group of three artists and poets, including Hanwell poet Shagufta Iqbal, developed concepts with residents and local traders.
The organisers said workshops were held to gather ideas and feedback, alongside creative writing sessions inviting participants to describe what they wanted to see in their neighbourhoods. Ms Iqbal said: “I feel like this project celebrates the local high street and aims to bring community and stories into those spaces. It’s time we started honouring our high streets.”
Michael Ostrolenk, who took part in a workshop, said: “Community art projects like this can bring local people together from different backgrounds.”
Six installations, including neon signs and brickwork murals, are on display in Pitshanger Lane in Ealing, Oldfields Circus in Greenford, and around Station Approach and Uxbridge Road in Hanwell.
Councillor Blerina Hashani, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for thriving communities, said: “Culture and art inspire people and communities. I hope the artwork and words will inspire passers-by and residents in the high street and build on the sense of pride in the area.”
