Ealing Council invites artists for Southall arts project

Ealing Council has launched a call for artists to create a series of community murals and public artworks across Southall, with applications open until 3 September 2025. The initiative aims to celebrate Southall’s rich heritage and diversity while improving the look and feel across a number of areas in the town.

The project, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), is part of the Southall Public Art Project and will see commissions installed at six prominent sites. These include the Dominion Centre and Southall Library, Southall train station bridge, Southall Broadway bridge, Norwood Road bridge over the Grand Union Canal, Merrick Road footbridge, and shopfronts and surroundings along Southall Broadway. Budgets for the commissions range from £10,000 to £85,000.

Ealing Council has called the project as a “transformative initiative” designed to enhance the experience of residents and visitors while marking Southall out as a cultural destination. The works are expected to be immersive, educational and engaging, drawing on the area’s distinct identity.

Councillor Blerina Hashani, cabinet member for thriving communities, said: “We want to celebrate Southall’s rich history, heritage and vibrant cultural diversity. By working with the community and artists to create public artworks, we want to foster a sense of pride and revitalise the look of public spaces in Southall for everyone who lives, works and visits there.”

Artists, designers and architects are being invited to submit proposals that respond to a set of themes: Southall’s heritage, the migration experience, the resurgence of its creative community, and its future vision.

According to the council, the process will involve collaboration with local stakeholders and residents to ensure the artworks reflect the lived experiences of the community. Organisers hope the commissions will not only brighten up major thoroughfares and gateways to the town but also “create legacy, break stereotypes, foster community engagement and enhance the aesthetic appeal of public spaces.”
