Fly-tippers in Ealing set to face £5,000 fines

New powers allowing local authorities, including Ealing Council, to issue fly-tipping fines of up to £5,000 and littering fines of up to £750 will come into force later this summer under new government measures announced on Wednesday (15 July 2026) to tackle waste crime.

The maximum fixed penalty for fly-tipping will rise from £1,000 to £5,000, while people caught littering could face fines of up to £750, up from the current maximum of £500. The move comes a year after Ealing Council raised its previous maximum fly-tipping fine from £400 to £1,000.

Ealing Council has previously said it spends around £3 million a year clearing illegally dumped waste.

Earlier this year, EALING.NEWS revealed that fly-tipping incidents in the borough rose by more than 50% in a year. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) figures showed 25,394 incidents were recorded in Ealing during 2024/25, up from 16,828 the previous year, making it one of the worst-affected boroughs in London.

The government says giving stronger powers to local authorities including Ealing Council will help tackle the rise of fly-tipping across communities.

Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds said: “Fly-tipping and littering is a disgrace that blights local communities. We are sending a clear message to those who dump their rubbish – we are coming after you and you will pay the price.”
