The Ealing Green Party says it will be “holding Labour to account” after winning its first ever seats on Ealing Council — including sweeping all three seats in Hanwell Broadway from Labour.
The result saw senior Ealing Labour figures lose out in the ward, including Polly Knewstub, Labour cabinet member for healthy equal lives, and Yoel Gordon, who has been a Labour councillor since 2010.
The Greens also won seats in South Acton and North Acton, giving the party five councillors on Ealing Council for the first time.
The party’s new councillors are Clare Welsby, Natalia Kubica and Andrew Walkley in Hanwell Broadway, Husam Alharahsheh in South Acton and Simon Anthony in North Acton.
Neil Reynolds, chair of Ealing Green Party, said the results marked a major moment for the party in the borough.
He told EALING.NEWS: “We are delighted to have won our first Ealing Council seats in Hanwell Broadway, South Acton and North Acton.”
Mr Reynolds said the party had significantly increased its support across the borough and was now Labour’s main challenger in several areas.
He added: “Natalia, Andrew, Clare, Husam and Simon will make fantastic councillors and champions for the local communities in their wards. Now the hard work of holding Labour to account and repay the faith of supporters begins.”
Labour retained overall control of Ealing Council despite losing 10 councillors in the elections.
Before the vote, Labour held 56 seats on the council, with the Liberal Democrats holding eight seats, Conservatives four, and two councillors sitting as independents.
Following the election, Ealing Council is now made up of 46 Labour councillors, 13 Liberal Democrats, five Conservatives, five Green Party councillors and one independent councillor.
